By this time, you are very likely thinking that induction cooking may be appropriate for your kitchen. However, before purchasing an induction cooktop, there are several things that you should consider. These issues are explained in this installment of the Induction Cooking Explained series. Compatible Cookware Considerations As explained in part 1, induction cooktops work only with cookware made from ferrous materials. Anyone with a significant investment in aluminum, glass, ceramic or non-magnetic stainless steel cookware will need to be aware that these types of cookware will not work on an induction cooktop and should include the cost purchasing new cookware when evaluating the cost of the induction cooktop. However, much of the most popular cookware used on conventional cooktops will work with induction cooktops, so many people will be able to use their existing cookware.
Downdraft cooktops are cleaner in their operation. They do not require nearly as much maintenance has hooded cooktops. They save you a lot of space, that you can easily use for other useful things such as cutting up the veggies you want to cook on your downdraft cooktop. So this greatly reduces the chance of having a cooking related fire in your kitchen. The biggest reason that you dont find magnetic induction cooktops in every home is the cost of the cooktop and the pots and pans. When this technology first came out, prices range from $1,800 to $3,500. When you compare that with $550 to $750 for top-performing electric cooktops and $650 to $1,200 for gas, the price is a bit steep for most people. But if you shop around online, many times you can find discounts that will make it more affordable. You also have to figure in the cost of new cookware for the new cooktop. This technology requires you to use cookware that is made of cast iron or enameled steel. You can try to use your old stainless-steel cookware and sometimes you will get lucky and it will work. But if you have copper or aluminum pots and pans, you are out of luck. One way to test your cookware is to see if a magnet will stick to it. If the magnet sticks, your cookware will most probably work.
The latest advance in electric cooktops is induction technology, which uses electromagnetic technology to transfer heat directly to your cookware instead of the burner surface. Induction cooktops provide instantaneous temperature control and the safety of a cooler surface, and theyre energy efficient. Keep in mind that you must use induction cooktops with cookware thats magnetic or the heat transfer will fail. The advantages of induction cooktops dont come without a price most models start at $1,500 and prices rise steeply from there. Size and Ventilation Cooktops offer homeowners flexibility when it comes to kitchen design because they can be installed anywhere in the kitchen. However, youll still need to determine which size fits your plans and your cooking needs.
